IBM creates world's most powerful computer

The full Blue Gene/L machine was designed and built in collaboration with the Department of Energy's NNSA/Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, and has a peak speed of 360 Teraflops. Blue Gene systems occupy the #1 (Blue Gene/L) and #4 (Blue Gene Watson) positions in the TOP500 supercomputer list announced in June 2007.

The first supercomputer capable of crunching through a thousand trillion mathematical operations every second has been announced by IBM. This is roughly equivalent to the combined processing power of a 2.4-kilometre-high pile of laptop computers.

Blue Gene/P will be capable of a peak performance of 3000 trillion calculations, or floating point operations, per second (3 petaflops). But its sustained performance is expected to level out at around 1 petaflop.

Each processing chip inside the machines contains 4 unique processor cores. There are 32 of these processors in every circuit board, and 32 circuit boards in every rack. With a total of 216 racks, the full machine features 884,736 unique processor cores.

The first Blue Gene/P machine will be installed at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, US, later in 2007.

H-1B Increase Dealt Death Blow

The U.S. Senate voted controversial immigration reform bill, effectively killing the closely watched legislation and dashing the hopes of IT employers who'd hoped for an increase in the number of H-1B work visas this year.

President Bush called his top domestic priority for 2007, was effectively blocked when the Senate failed to invoke cloture and limit debate on the bill (S-1639) in a 46-53 vote.

The immigration bill included a provision to raise the yearly limit on H-1B visas from 65,000 to 115,000.

This was the second time in June that backers of the legislation were unable to muster the 60 votes needed to surmount conservative Republican and mixed-liberal opposition to the legislation. President Bush, scrambling to salvage the imperiled bill, had called Senators early in the morning to rally support before the crucial test vote.

Zend PHP Framework 1.0 for Web development

Zend 1.0 is an application framework for building high-quality Web applications and Web services with PHP.

Zend is offering its open-source framework for free but sells ancillary support services.

Zend Technologies will offer the 1.0 version of its framework for PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) Web application development, which in pre-release forms has attracted more than 1 million downloads.

Zend Framework 1.0 will not be the only PHP development framework around as it will share the scene with frameworks like Cake and Prado. But Zend's is the first framework with support from a corporate entity and relevant contributions from companies like IBM and Google.

An upcoming version of Zend Framework will add support for Microsoft's CardSpace identity management technology. Microsoft, a Zend partner, is enabling SQL Server to work with the framework.

Microsoft on Monday released the first Community Technology Preview of SQL Server 2008, the official name for what was initially codenamed "Katmai."

Katmai is set to ship in 2008 and the company is making it a central plank of its push into the business intelligence space.

improvements slated for SQL Server 2008 include added support for various data types, including spatial and unstructured data.

Microsoft also announced it had acquired technology from Dundas Data Visualization Inc., for the creation of charting in SQL Server Reporting Services.

Building a number of developer-specific capabilities into the next-gen server release: The ADO.NET Entity Framework (EF) and the Language Integrated Query (LINQ).
Developers can use the Entity Framework to program against data defined in a conceptual way, instead of having to work with information organized in tables and columns. "With the Entity Framework, we’re essentially programming at the conceptual level rather than at a logical level or a physical level.......

Microsoft Launches new computer, called 'Surface'

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates demonstrates the company's new computer, called Surface,
which is designed like a table with a touch-screen...

First commercially available surface computer from Microsoft breaks down barriers and provides effortless interaction with information using touch, natural gestures and physical objects.

The device features a 30-inch table-like display that consumers operate via hand gestures or by placing physical objects on the computer's surface. Microsoft officials say Surface, the company's first device in its new category of surface computing products, is designed to simplify a user's interaction with digital content such as photos and music. The device was unveiled on May 30 2007.

Use GMail as your Hard Drive !!!

GMail Drive
is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Gmail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computerfolder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a Gmail e-mail account, which includes storage space of 2000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your Gmail account and retrieve them again.
When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the Gmail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.

You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.
Because the Gmail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in Gmail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters in the subject) to your archived mail folder.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 65 characters). Since the tool hooks up with the free Gmail Service provided by Google, changes in the Gmail system may break the tool's ability to function. cannot guarantee that files stored in this manner will be accessible in the future.
